Making Strategy Games Work on a Small Screen
Strategy games have a screen-size problem. Complex boards that shine on a monitor turn into a squinting nightmare on a phone. The developers who solve this deserve real credit.
Tideborne Armada handles it by keeping units big and readable, and by leaning on a few strong systems instead of a hundred small ones. Wind direction and ship range are easy to see and hard to master, which is the sweet spot.
The best mobile strategy games also chunk their matches. A skirmish should end before your bus stop arrives. Nobody wants to abandon a two-hour battle at a red light.
My rule of thumb: if I can read the whole board at a glance and still lose because I outsmarted myself, the design is working.
